  • Brooklyn: People and Places, Past and Present

More than 2.8 million people currently call Brooklyn home, and over the past few decades, the boom of art galleries, stores, and nightlife in this proud borough of New York has drawn visitors from near and far. Yet the fascinating mix of people, places, and institutions that define Brooklyn today existed long before the current cultural renaissance. In this profusely illustrated book, writers Grace Glueck and Paul Gardner provide a historic tour of the borough, from the Brooklyn Bridge and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to Prospect Park and Coney Island. The reader is also introduced to the dynamic people of Brooklyn, from Hasidic Williamsburg to the African American community in Bedford-Stuyvesant, and some of its most celebrated natives, including Woody Allen, Spike Lee, Barbra Streisand, Mae West, and Truman Capote.

  • Street Value: Shopping, Planning, and Politics at Fulton Mall (Inventory Books)

Downtown Brooklyn's Fulton Mall is one of the most bustling public spaces in New York City. A colossus of commerce, itwelcomes over one hundred thousand shoppers daily and ranks among the most profitable commercial real estate in the entire country, and is also home to some of the city's most recognized institutions, including cheesecake mecca Junior's, that have been immortalized in song, film, and culture. Despite its historic link to Brooklyn's past and its financial success as a shopping district, Fulton Street is rarely celebrated in New York. The street's hand-painted signs, customized jewelry, rare sneakers, mega-church, and vendors offer a special sampling of noncorporate commerce, but many consider its sensorial and physical density a sign of blight. Misunderstandings about race, class, and profitability have led Fulton Street to be characterized as run-down, dangerous, or underutilized, and as a result it has been subject to nearly continuous renovation. Recently rezoned and becoming increasingly attractive to national chain stores, Fulton Street is once again poised for big changes. Street Value is a challenge to creatively rethink the planning and urban design of Fulton Street and other urban shopping districts. Street Value explores the mall's historical and contempo...

  • Brooklyn : New York in Vintage Postcards

From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Brooklyn, New York, showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.

  • Albert Anastasia Puts Tough Joe Amberg On The Spot Brooklyn, New York September 30, 1935 - eBook

Albert Anastasia met with Louis Capone, Pittsburgh Phil Strauss and others before calling out a hit on Joseph "Tough Joe" Amberg on September 30, 1935. One of four brothers Amberg was perhaps the most dominant Jewish Mafia figure in Brooklyn at the time. He was slain in execution style in a garage in the Brownsville section. Two men dressed as garage mechanics and another nicely dressed man carried out the assassinations of Amberg and his chauffeur/bodyguard Morris Kessler. A policeman shouted at the "mechanics" before they fled on foot. Both men returned and piled into a 35 Plymouth which was the getaway car.

  • Report of the Chief Engineer of the New York & Brooklyn Bridge: (Abridged, Annotated) - eBook

A hero of the Battle of Gettysburg and a veteran of many other American Civil War battles, Washington Roebling assumed the duties of Chief Engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge only a few short years after the war ended. This report was written by Roebling and his staff six years before the completion of the famous bridge. It contains fascinating details about the construction methods, material selection, and materials testing that are easily understood by any lay person. Roebling suffered a debilitating injury from decompression sickness due to time spent deep in the bridge's caissons. His wife Emily was essential in helping him finish the project while viewing it from his apartment windows. She was a critical link between her husband and his engineers on the construction site, as well as helping him write reports. For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.  Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.
