  • Christian Dior: The Early Years 1947-1957

In 1946, France was in the doldrums. The war, the humiliation of German occupation and the rationing of all essential products had turned the City of Light into a gray and sad reflection of its former self. It was at this darkest of moments that Christian Dior, then a young designer for Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong, met Marcel Boussac, France's textile king and the country's most powerful industrialist. Boussac offered to set up Dior in business, a lease came due on 30 Avenue Montaigne - still the Dior headquarters - and the young designer consulted his mystic. She fell into a trance and cried out "It will be extraordinary. Your house will revolutionize fashion".And so it did when, in 1947, Christian Dior presented his first couture collection. Women were finally given back their femininity, narrow waists, high and prominent busts, long skirts and fabulous evening dresses made up of seemingly endless meters of luxurious cloth, often beaded or embroidered by the great master Lesage. Carmel Snow, the American fashion doyenne, proclaimed, "Christian, it's a completely new look", and under this banner the world's fashion press heralded the return of haute couture. This book is based mostly on photographs in the Dior archives, and is the detailed history of the first decade of the g...

  • 100 Years of Passion for Grosse and Bijoux Christian Dior: Henkel & Grosse Jewellery

o The first comprehensive monograph on the firm Henkel & Grosse with numerous illustrations of the jewelry and its exciting history, against the backdrop of the then current fashion created by the great couture designers of the twentieth century The jewelry firm Suddeutsche Gold und Haar-Bijourterie, founded in 1907 by Heinrich Henkel and Florentin Grosse, experienced after World War I its first successes with costume jewelry made of bronze, aluminium, wood, bakelite and galalite. In 1955 Henkel & Grosse started its cooperation with Christian Dior (1905-57) in Paris and were licensed as the sole producers and distributors of Dior jewelry. In connection with its own designs, however, the company always maintained its independence. As of the 1960s they expanded their portfolio to include Grosse Bijoux, Grosse Sterling and Grosse Gold, with fashion always dictating the design. Brooches, necklaces and ear clips in colorful, fanciful blossom forms to match the petticoat dresses of the time were produced in sets in various price classes for a wide customer base. The enterprise, led by four generations of the Grosse family, had at its zenith over 600 employees and a worldwide distribution. Their products were designed and produced in Pforzheim and in the US, later also in Asia. The Dior...

  • Dior Glamour: 1952-1962

A collection of the lavish and iconic gowns of Christian Dior, from the 1950s and ’60s, captured by the legendary photographer Mark Shaw. Iconic photographer Mark Shaw documented the ultra-exclusive Parisian fashion world, focusing on Paris’s long-standing top couturier Christian Dior. Shaw’s photographs—some of the first fashion photographs ever shot in color—capture the most stunning and extraordinary fashion of the era. This lavish volume embodies the glamour of that time, from rare moments of Christian Dior during fittings to editorial-style photographs of models, socialites, and actresses posing in Dior’s ballgowns, day suits, and haute couture collections. Shaw’s photojournalistic style changed fashion photography forever: his approach was to photograph wide, giving the subject a sense of context, creating an environment as exquisitely transformative as the subject and garment. With an eye for intimacy and opulence, this book features more than 200 color and black-and-white photographs, many never published before, having only recently been found in a secret vault by his estate. Dior Glamour: 1952–1962 captures the drama and elegance of the period’s style and will be treasured by lovers of photography, fashion, style, history, and cultured living.
