  • Riverside Park: The Splendid Sliver

Riverside Park is an illustrated tribute to Frederick Law Olmsted's "other" New York City sanctuary. Since its conception in the 1870s, the park has undergone a number of transformations and suffered from periods of misuse and neglect, but in 1984, much-needed renovations turned this city oasis into what is today one of Manhattan's most beautiful attractions."If the West Side does not stir you, you are a clod, past redemption."-Robert MosesMillions visit the Upper West Side landmark annually, and despite the heavy use, thousands of volunteers keep the grounds pristine. The park is now being extended southward as part of Manhattan's plan to reclaim the island's six hundred miles of waterfront, and Riverside Drive-Olmsted's curving thoroughfare flanking the park-has long been one of Manhattan's premier addresses."I often feel drawn to the Hudson River.... I never get tired of looking at it; it hypnotizes me."-Joseph Mitchell, from The RivermenFrom the time it was carved out of an unpromising landscape, Riverside Park has continued to reinvent itself. Using photographs (both contemporary and historical), illustrations, poems, and original and excerpted narrative, Edward Grimm and E. Peter Schroeder tell the intriguing story of a symbol of the modern revitalization of New York City. ...

  • The New England Theology: From Jonathan Edwards to Edwards Amasa Park

Many recognize the importance of Jonathan Edwards, yet the writings of those who followed in his theological footsteps are less widely known. This collection draws together their key works, making them accessible to a broader audience and providing readers with easy access to an important part of the Calvinist tradition in America. In addition to plentiful selections from Edwards, the volume includes eighteenth- and nineteenth-century works from writers such as Samuel Hopkins, Nathanael Emmons, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Timothy Dwight, Nathaniel W. Taylor, and Charles G. Finney. Their writings have broadly influenced evangelical theology in America, and this collection will be of great value for those interested in the study of Jonathan Edwards and the New England Theology tradition.

  • Wichita's Riverside Parks

Wichita was founded in 1870 at the junction of the Little and Big Arkansas Rivers in south central Kansas. From the very beginning, the rivers have been a focus for social and recreational activity. Parks, both public and private, were established along these waterways near downtown to capitalize on this natural asset and have gone through many changes. Some of these parks are now over 100 years old, but one no longer exists, having literally been dug up and hauled away in wheelbarrows in 1933. This book chronicles many of the colorful activities and events that have occurred in these parks over the years, and shows how vital they are in the Wichita of today.

  • Three One-Act Plays : Riverside Drive Old Saybrook Central Park West

Three delightful one-act plays set in and around New York, in which sophisticated characters confound one another in ways only Woody Allen could imagine Woody Allen's first dramatic writing published in years, "Riverside Drive," "Old Saybrook," and "Central Park West" are humorous, insightful, and unusually readable plays about infidelity. The characters, archetypal New Yorkers all, start out talking innocently enough, but soon the most unexpected things arise--and the reader enjoys every minute of it (though not all the characters do). These plays (successfully produced on the New York stage and in regional theaters on the East Coast) dramatize Allen's continuing preoccupation with people who rationalize their actions, hide what they're doing, and inevitably slip into sexual deception--all of it revealed in Allen's quintessentially pell-mell dialogue.
