  • The Land of Heart's Delight : Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island

Shortlisted for the 2014 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. Shortlisted for a 2014 BC Book Prize. Just how, and why, did Vancouver Island get onto the map? How was knowledge of our immediate geography acquired and recorded? With 130 maps, dating between 1593 and 1915, this cartographic history tells the story of how Vancouver Island and the surrounding area came to be mapped. The book shows local cartographic milestones, marking progress in our knowledge through the island's rich--although comparatively short--recorded history. However, the maps, by themselves and without context, cannot tell the whole story. The accompanying text reveals the motives, constraints, agendas, and intrigues that underpin their making. The narrative, roughly chronological, begins before the arrival of Europeans and concludes at the outset of the First World War and includes an introduction on the history and significance of map-making, as well as an afterword summarizing subsequent cartographic developments. Also included are an index, endnotes, a list of cartographic sources, and a glossary.

  • Vancouver Then and Now®

In Vancouver Then and Now, archival images have been paired with new photos of the same scenes as they appear today to reveal over a century of dramatic change in this beautiful city. Vancouver--a major seaport and coastal metropolis--was originally a dense, temperate rain forest. Early industry around the fledgling settlements on the Burrard Inlet exploited the area's natural resources--lumber, furs, and fish. But the biggest boon to trade and the establishment of the city came with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1887. Downtown Vancouver evolved into a major city throughout the 20th century with a striking skyline that includes the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Christ Church Cathedral, and the Hotel Vancouver. Sites include: Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver Art Gallery, The Marine Building, Spencer's Department Store, Sinclair Centre, Vancouver Club, Birks, Canadian Pacific Railway, Sun Tower, Granville Street, Orpheum Theatre, Rogers Mansion, Coal Harbour, Sylvia Hotel, Vancouver Rowing Club, Stanley Park, Prospect Point, Lions Gate Bridge, English Beach, Stanley Theatre, Glen Brae, Kitsilano Beach, and Capilano Bridge.

  • Service to the Fleet The Vancouver Escort Repair Ships - eBook

In total, twenty-one maintenance ships were ordered from Canadian shipbuilders (ten from Burrard Drydock, six from West Coast Shipbuilders and five North Vancouver Ship Repair) for use by the Royal Navy. Sixteen 'Victory' type vessels were completed by West Coast shipbuilders but as the war ended, the orders for the final five ships were cancelled. These five vessels, Mull of Oa, Rattray Head, Orfordness, Selsey Bill and Tarbet Ness were completed as merchant ships and as they had been built to a high specification, found a ready market as cargo liners.
